Galapagos Island
Iguanas
Land Iguanas, Lizards, Marine Iguanas.
| Land Iguanas | The Land Iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus) are yard long, 25 pound lizards with a spiky crest. Their tough, reptilian skin can be gray, yellowish, rust or black. Although they may look fearsome, the land iguanas are lazy and herbivorous (feeding on Opuntia cactus and other plants). The land iguana is considered highly endangered throughout the Galapagos. |
| Marine Iguanas | The Marine Iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is the only sea-going lizard in the world. Larger males are famous for their offshore swimming and diving abilities. They can be found as deep as forty feet underwater. An average dive may last from five to ten minutes, with the longest observed at about sixty minutes. Iguanas were probably the first creatures to colonize the Galapagos. |
